This was indeed a rare opportunity.

Oh very cool, for sure! But here’s one we saw at Gateway Classics at the Chicago Oppo Meet - for less $$:

I’d rather have a less nice square body with more miles for a lot less monies.

Nope, those oddly low-mile vehicles are not for me. To enjoy them I’d have to drive them which would take away the reason it was special in the first place.

I saw that exact truck in person. Right before I was forced to move to FL :(

I’d argue much less desirable because ‘84 and all that and too flashy. No, the ‘75 would be much more my taste.

As long as it was early 70s. Relatively straight and no rust is all I’d demand.

Indeed, probably never see one with that low of mileage again.

I’m the oddball I guess. I would have no problem putting 100k miles on that time capsule and selling it for $18k afterwards.

A new truck would depreciate that much in the 1st year, and this is way f-ing cooler than any truck built today.

First off, why buy any vehicle if not to drive it? And we’re only talking $26k here, and not ten times that much. No, I don’t have $26k to blow on a car. Buy this one, keep it well maintained and just don’t drive it daily. Keep it nice.

This is a car you buy for its coolness — and its utility — and take it out on a regular basis. And hardly an embarrassing extravigance at the price it fetched.

But hey: we’re not in the market, so we can be philosophical, right?

I’d like to add stepside to the list of wants.

I never have, nor can I see myself ever, purchasing an automobile with a thought in my mind about how much I’d sell if for later, unless I’d bought the car for the sole purpose of flipping it, which I’ve done with a few Crown Vics in the past. The Versa I’m driving now, I discovered the market wasn’t there, so instead of a profit margin on resale, I got a discount and kept the car.

This was a niche vehicle, but not an extravagant one, IMHO.

‘Twas a cool look, the Stepside. And lighter by a few hundred pounds, I should think.

I’m more of a fleetside man myself, not that I’d kick a stepside out of bed, so to speak. My neighbor has a cool late 70's stepside that occasionally leaves the garage.

mmmm .. plaid bench!

I wish some manufacturer had the cahones to sell me a new crew cab truck, with two plaid bench seats in it.

I totally agree, I wouldn’t buy a vehicle and not drive it which is why I think I’d really rather have one that has some miles on it as well as some well earned flaws so I could enjoy bashing it around without some sense of guilt nagging on me that I’m “ruining” it.

Agree that the older ones look better - I like the round headlights, personally. I do like the two-tone paint and wheels on the other one, though, and they’re both nice trucks.

I guess if I were an investor with a huge garage/storage facility, and few million to keep it air conditioned, heated, and secure, then sure! Why not spend a ridiculous amount of money on a low mileage, ugly, malaise-era truck?

On the other hand there’s hookers and blow, so.....it’s going to be a tough choice.

You should think about it. It’s not so much about making a profit, as it is preserving your money. If you buy smart you can have a lot of fun with little cost of ownership. Some great vehicles out there for less than a new camry would cost you. I’m not talking monthly payments. I’m talking depreciation, cost of maintenance, and insurance (that’s the true cost to own a car). My Lightning for example costs about $30 a month to own (insurance is $120 a year, tag is $20 a year. Sure it was $9k to buy, but I could sell it for that (or possibly more) today, next year, 3 years from now. It’s cheaper than renting a pickup from Home Depot once a month.

I’m out here doing $2000 worth of maintenance for about $300 in parts on my ‘97 Safari. I bought that car for $3k and have since invested in an engine and a transmission and driven it over 100k miles. It’s only broken down three time that I can think of and has never stranded me. I rotate the tires diligently and change the oil every 5k miles along with a careful inspection. This practical approach has brought me many years of satisfying car ownership. And my Safari? It doesn’t look like much, but nobody’s drives any better than mine does. It’s hard to make meaningful cost/benefit analysis on car ownership. You can either afford it or you can’t. You can either justify it or you can’t, but to whom? Spouse, maybe... There are a lot of stupid, pointless cars out there and with cars, it’s like, how pointless are you willing to get?
